Jim Thompson

"Years before, when I was a kid, I owned a little Ford runabout, a Model T. And I took care of that car as a man takes care of his love--for I did love it. I was and remain a Model T guy, more comfortable with imperfection than its opposite, cherishing the ability to discern and shore up a latent weakness. I knew the car wasn't a Cadillac. Hell, what would a guy like me do with a Cad? It was a Model T, and I treated it good and it treated me good. When I sold it, after two years of trouble-free driving, it was actually in better shape than the day I bought it.
Two months later it was in the junk heap.
Less than two months after I split with Ellen, she was whoring."

lake

This song invariably reminds me of a time when I didn't know who emo kids were, and I blissfully had no idea what instant messenger, livejournal or any other internet sites were at all. Ironically, I decided to put this crap memory here.

It reminds me of a time when I could just sit and be content. At the abandoned tracks, with Karen, above Lakeside, just listening to the drum in the background, huddled together on some weathered old bench that no one had sat on in years. Watching the lights from the roller coasters and the train shine off the lake. From here, we could make out anything we needed to. People running about the park were small. The train moved slowly around the lake that was full of reflecting lights. And the traffic on the highway was clearly audible. For some reason, Radiohead always reminds me of run down places. I can't readily think of a time when I was happier than here.

life

"I think all our aim conversations offer crucial answers to life that can be explained simply by copying and pasting."

The bolt on my lower left side has begun the slow process of punching a hole in my lip, but fortunately there isn't any pain there anymore since it's all calloused and such. I can't wait to get these godforsaken things out in a week. And then shortly after, start chewing again. I'm also thoroughly impressed with the amount of attention/sympathy I got from my family and a few of my friends. Sure, it was a bad accident, but following the fact I was pretty ok. It was just incredibly annoying. A friend of mine from a ways off called me tonight on his late night/early morning walk, at the same time I was taking mine. It's odd that we both do that/procrastinate for the same reasons.

On that note, I need to stop studying for alien class. I can't learn anything more. I need to go somewhere soon too. Seattle, Anchorage, Anywhere out East. Or even just the mountains.

So I just discovered this afternoon that Souby flew down to south Mississippi last night to go forward with his idea of joining up with the relief efforts. So, yeah. Kudos to you, Andrew.
And today for the first time in 25 days I saw my tongue and ate some food. Some scrambled eggs. It was pretty awesome.

Dreams

I have always had trouble recounting my dreams, but usually there are one or two that I can remember vividly. At the end of the one I had last night, me, Nick and Jesse were standing outside the Gothic tonight, waiting to go see Tegan and Sarah. Jesse starting puking in the gutter, and me and Nick laughed/tried to help him. Then Nick started puking. Then I woke up. Hopefully there won't be a correlation to this in reality, as if there hasn't already been.

The band is proving to be interesting. As are trips to the renaissance festival/samurai sword shopping. And I'm going to miss Tiff + the Denver people by the time school starts up again. [EDIT]: Party at the Cait's tonight = people/place and of course, a memory that I won't forget, ever. I'll miss the upper half of Abo's. For sure.

_2005_
8/3- Von Bondies, Moaners, Machine Gun Blues- Larimer
8/11- Skeleton Key, Mood Syrup- Larimer
8/26- Black Black Ocean, The Coma Recovery, So Many Dynamos, Monofog- Rock Island
8/31- Pretty Girls Make Graves, Kill Me Tomorrow, IQU- Fox
??9/11-Interpol- Fillmore
??9/11- Minus the Bear, These Arms are Snakes, Thunderbirds are Now!, Atlas- Rock Island
9/16- Bloc Party, The Kills, The Noisettes- Fillmore
9/27- Franz Ferdinand, Pretty Girls Make Graves- Fillmore
10/7- Coheed & Cambria, The Blood Brothers, Dredg, Mewithoutyou- Ogden
10/13- Thrice, Underoath, The Bled, Veda- Fillmore
10/23- The Decemberists, Cass McCombs- Paramount

How is there actually a band called Abracastabya?

Quickly, Bhusan and Allison are certainly the best people at work. I am probabaly just biased to liking Nepalese people. But also, today a man of probably 60-65 came in and asked me about the At the Drive in live dvd. And it was not for his grandkid or anything, but for himself. So we talked about them and their offshoots for about 15 minutes. Anyway who cares, but it was pretty awesome.

Last night a girl made a not so flattering comment about me as I was walking by, but only because she thought my music was on. I gave her a great big smile and she made an awkwardly surprised face back at me. Turns out walking through large groups of people with your headphones in but not on can be quite amusing.

I take walks for various reasons and I took a really long one last night, and one that I've only taken once before. A good number of odd things happened along the way on it, namely a bat flying by my head. His sonar must have been broken or something because his right wing definitely slapped me in the face, and as a result I was quite surprised and yelled out FUCK at the top of my lungs.

_2005_
<s>7/9- Motion City Soundtrack, Jamison Parker, Dropping Daylight, This is me Smiling- Bluebird</s> -Camping in sheep-ville year 2
7/10- Lucero, The Honorary Title, The Glass- Bluebird
7/15- SONia and disappear fear, Timothy Thomas Cleary, Val Franz- Rock Island
7/16- Action Action, Spitalfield, Gatsby's American Dream, Down to Earth Approach- Bluebird
7/19- Head Automatica, theStart, I am the Avalanche, The Faculty- Bluebird
7/20- Caesars, The Sights, The Golden Republic- Bluebird
7/26- Kings of Leon, Secret Machines- Paramount
8/11- Skeleton Key- Larimer
8/26- Black Black Ocean, The Coma Recovery, So Many Dynamos, Monofog- Rock Island
8/31- Pretty Girls Make Graves, Kill Me Tomorrow, IQU- Rock Island
9/11- Minus the Bear, These Arms are Snakes, Thunderbirds are Now!- Rock Island

And don't mess around with your timestamps people, because sometimes your entries are out of order timewise, and well, yeah.

Now all I have to look forward to are senior discounts.

I'll be at a show again, with different people at a different place and different bands. But it'll be good as always. Things are perhaps too busy. No. They definitely are. But something weird today, is that this song was playing on a commercial. That doesn't seem particularly right.

_2005_
7/1- Xiu Xiu, This Song is a Mess but so am I, Good For Cows, Sun Has Risen, DJ Sara T- Larimer
7/9- Motion City Soundtrack, Jamison Parker, Dropping Daylight, This is me Smiling- Bluebird
7/10- Lucero, The Honorary Title, The Glass- Bluebird
7/15- SONia and disappear fear, Val Franz- Rock Island
7/16- Action Action, Spitalfield, Gatsby's American Dream, Down to Earth Approach- Bluebird
7/19- Head Automatica, theStart, I am the Avalanche, The Faculty- Bluebird
7/20- Caesars, The Sights, The Golden Republic- Bluebird
7/26- Kings of Leon, Secret Machines- Paramount
8/11- Skeleton Key- Larimer
8/26- Black Black Ocean, The Coma Recovery, So Many Dynamos- Rock Island
8/31- Pretty Girls Make Graves, Kill Me Tomorrow, IQU- Rock Island

Gravy Train would be ridiculous though.

Neat

Last night on my walk, a big black dog came running out of an alley and started barking crazily at me. Neat.

Some people are doing well right now, and plenty are not. The new Star Wars was oddly disturbing, as is my frequently empty house. Which is a change from times past. Last night Wagen, Matt and Mike called me. This morning Souby. So after Xing gets back tomorrow, it'll be almost everyone. Weird. This new interactive art stuff I got though is pretty nifty. So I guess I'll head back soon.

_2005_
5/24- Of Montreal, Mannequin Makeout, Mr. Pacman- Bluebird
??5/25- Melt Banana, Rolling Blackouts, Constellations- Larimer
??5/25- Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal- Paramount
5/29- Tilly & the Wall, Hot IQ's, Le Boom- Climax
5/31- The Mars Volta- Fillmore
6/6- Rogue Wave, The Helio Sequence, Nightingale- Fox
6/8- The Blood Brothers, The Plot to Blow up the Eiffel Tower, Big Business- Bubba's Bowling Club, Indianapolis
??6/20- Hot Hot Heat, Robbers on High Street, The Blue Van- Ogden
??6/20- 30 Seconds to Mars- Bluebird
6/27- The Robot Ate Me- Larimer
7/1- Xiu Xiu, This Song is a Mess but so am I, Good For Cows, Sun Has Risen- Larimer
7/9- Motion City Soundtrack, Jamison Parker, Dropping Daylight, This is me Smiling- Bluebird
7/10- Lucero, The Honorary Title, The Glass- Bluebird
7/16- Action Action, Spitalfield, Gatsby's American Dream- Bluebird
7/26- Kings of Leon, Secret Machines- Paramount
8/11- Skeleton Key- Larimer
8/31- Pretty Girls Make Graves, Kill Me Tomorrow, IQU- Rock Island

Three trips to starbucks at 4 a.m. three nights in a row.
Jig

IT STARTED SNOWING AGAIN.

And it's 4:30 in the A.M. I can't sleep. I got on a roll reading this book for class. It's oddly engaging, a rebroadcast of tonight's conan [which was a repeat anyway] is on, and Ryan is up building his final project. Chris is asleep at Court's, so we have the basement to ourselves and I probably will just take sporadic naps again. Tomorrow's the last day of classes, and I am having mixed feelings on this year ending. Good for some things, bad for others. At any rate, I've been walking around in the massive amounts of snow that we have on my various trips to various places tonight, and it's ridiculous. It's April. What the hell.

_2005_
5/4- Kings of Leon, Red Cloud- Fox
5/6- Rocket Summer, Brandtson, Umbrellas, The Vanity- Rock Island
5/10- The Shins, The Brunettes- Fillmore
5/24- Of Montreal, Mannequin Makeout- Bluebird
??5/25- Melt Banana, Rolling Blackouts, Constellations- Larimer
??5/25- Millencolin, Boys Night Out, A Thorn for Every Heart, Roses are Red- Ogden
??5/25- Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal- Paramount
5/29- Tilly & the Wall- Climax
5/31- The Mars Volta- Fillmore
6/8- The Blood Brothers, The Plot to Blow up the Eiffel Tower, Big Business- Bubba's Bowling Club, Indianapolis
6/27- The Robot Ate Me- Larimer
7/1- Xiu Xiu, Good For Cows, Sun Has Risen - Larimer
7/9- Motion City Soundtrack- Bluebird
7/16- Action Action, Spitalfield, Gatsby's American Dream- Bluebird
7/26- The Bravery- Bluebird

Ryan just did an odd little jig through my room involving lots of snapping, and I think we're going to ihop in a few hours.

Glass

Whitney's narration is going to be hard to fit together. But after this. I am done with 8mm. So that's sort of a relief, and a bit sad at the same time. At least now I have everything I need to make my own. I will not however, miss the dungeon in Macky.

Extraterrestrials, film history, history of space travel, 16mm, independent filmmaking and Subsaharan African political systems. And while I was being told how silly and random of a class schedule that is for the fall, Jake ate some glass on accident.

_2005_
4/22- Fiery Furnaces, Dios Malos- Fox
5/4- Kings of Leon, Red Cloud- Fox
5/6- Rocket Summer, Brandtson, Umbrellas, The Vanity- Rock Island
5/10- The Shins, The Brunettes- Fillmore
5/17- Open Hand, Idiot Pilot, The Kinison, Signal to Noise- Club 156
5/24- Of Montreal, Mannequin Makeout- Bluebird
??5/25- Melt Banana, Constellations, Adai- Larimer
??5/25- Millencolin, Boys Night Out, A Thorn for Every Heart, Roses are Red- Ogden
??5/25- Queens of the Stone Age- Paramount
5/29- Tilly & the Wall- Climax
5/31- The Mars Volta- Fillmore
6/8- The Blood Brothers, The Plot to Blow up the Eiffel Tower, Big Business- Bubba's Bowling Club, Indianapolis
7/1- Xiu Xiu- Larimer
7/16- Action Action, Spitalfield, Gatsby's American Dream- Bluebird
7/26- The Bravery- Bluebird

I probably won't/shouldn't go to any of those shows on the 25th.

Psychosis

I didn't realize how easily one goes insane after getting virtually no sleep for two entire weeks. I experienced the after affects over the weekend, and perhaps still am. Listening to Kill me Tomorrow while doing so will not help stop the psychosis.

The architecture in Denver needs more appreciation, something unrealized by me until today, as I was able to take in the full majesty of the doors to the city and county building and the surrounding municipal buildings. Holy cow, the things are huge. "They were used to let elephants in when foreign dignitaries were visiting." Perfect. Cleaning up that part of downtown would be quite good, I'd probably wind up down there quite a bit more. Maybe not. Anyway it would be nice.
W.K. crapped out tonight, right after Minus the Bear and Honorary Title. Would be more lame had I not spent the time on so much randomness. Which has provided me with 10 minutes of film that I've got to have Whitney narrate. We'll see how that goes.

_2005_
4/22- Fiery Furnaces, Dios Malos- Fox
<s>4/29- Bright Eyes, The Faint- Ogden</s>
5/4- Kings of Leon- Fox
5/6- Rocket Summer, Brandtson, Umbrellas, The Vanity- Rock Island
5/10- The Shins, The Brunettes- Fillmore
<s>5/11- Dance Disaster Movement, Pacific Pride- Larimer</s>
5/17- Open Hand, Idiot Pilot, The Kinison- Club 156
5/24- Of Montreal, Mannequin Makeout- Bluebird
??5/25- Melt Banana, Constellations, Adai- Larimer
??5/25- Millencolin, Boys Night Out, A Thorn for Every Heart, Roses are Red- Ogden
5/29- Tilly & the Wall- Climax
5/31- The Mars Volta- Fillmore
6/8- The Blood Brothers, The Plot to Blow up the Eiffel Tower, Big Business- Bubba's Bowling Club, Indianapolis
7/1- Xiu Xiu- Larimer
7/16- Action Action, Spitalfield, Gatsby's American Dream- Bluebird
7/26- The Bravery- Bluebird

Fuck DDM, Radio 4, Afroman, Moby, VHS or Beta and plenty of others for being 21+. It seriously needs to be July already. And The Album Leaf played a show at the Hi-dive tonight? How the hell did I miss that one.

Trend

The White Stripes, The Fiery Furnaces, Bumblebeez 81, The Raveonettes, The Kills, Mommy & Daddy, The Knife, The Brunettes........This is an interesting trend.
Ward has been out for three classes now, and today we didn't even watch the usual movie becuase no one could get the 16mm projector to work. I neglected to help them out.

_2005_
4/11- Straylight Run, Minus the Bear, Honorary Title, Gratitude, Spitalfield- Starlight
4/12- Copeland, Acceptance, Lovedrug, Veda- Cervantes
4/22- Fiery Furnaces, Dios Malos- Fox
4/29- Bright Eyes, The Faint- Ogden
5/4- Kings of Leon- Fox
5/6- Rocket Summer, Brandtson, Umbrellas, The Vanity- Rock Island
5/10- The Shins, The Brunettes- Fillmore
5/11- Dance Disaster Movement, Pacific Pride- Larimer
5/17- Open Hand, Idiot Pilot, The Kinison- Club 156
5/24- Of Montreal, Mannequin Makeout- Bluebird
5/29- Tilly & the Wall- Climax
5/31- The Mars Volta- Fillmore
6/8- The Blood Brothers, The Plot to Blow up the Eiffel Tower, Big Business- Bubba's Bowling Club, Indianapolis
7/1- Xiu Xiu- Larimer

While gone I'll miss Headphones & Futureheads.
